Culinary Tips for the Best Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich

  • Use a nonstick skillet to prevent the eggs from sticking when you flip the sandwich.
  • Flip carefully! Use a wide spatula to flip the bread-and-egg base in one piece.
  • Use fully cooked sausage patties to save time — just heat through before adding to the sandwich.
  • Cook over medium-low heat to let the eggs set gently without browning too fast.
Pat tomatoes dry before layering to avoid sogginess.
  • Want it extra golden brown? Leave it in the pan for a few minutes after folding it into a sandwich. Flip to the other side if needed.

Ingredient Swaps & Substitutions

  • Whole Wheat or Sourdough Bread: Use any sturdy bread — whole wheat, sourdough, rye, or gluten-free.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar gives classic flavor, but you can use Swiss, provolone, or Monterey Jack.
  • Chicken Sausage: Use any nitrate-free breakfast sausage — chicken, turkey, or plant-based all work well.
  • Vegetables: Spinach and tomato are great, but arugula, roasted red pepper, or avocado would also complement the flavors.

Egg Sandwich Variations

  • Spicy Sausage Egg Sandwich: Add sliced jalapeños or a drizzle of hot sauce.
  • Pesto Sausage Egg Sandwich: Spread pesto on the bread before folding for a bright, herby twist.
  • Veggie Sausage Egg Sandwich: Load up on sautéed mushrooms, onions, or bell peppers for extra color and fiber.

Health Benefits of this Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich

When made with high-quality ingredients, this classic combo can be a balanced, nourishing meal.

Eggs

There is some confusion surrounding eggs. For a long time, it was recommended to limit eggs and other foods high in cholesterol, but more recent research shows that dietary cholesterol does not usually impact blood cholesterol levels. Eggs do contain some saturated fat in the yolk, which can raise cholesterol levels, so be mindful of that. That said, this doesn’t mean you should just stick to egg whites. While the white is rich in protein, the yolk also contains protein along with disease-fighting phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. Eat the whole egg for the best nutrition!

Whole grain bread

Whole grains are a good source of fiber and complex carbohydrates. Fiber is important for digestion, satiety, stable blood sugar, cholesterol management, and healthy gut bacteria. Complex carbohydrates provide steady energy and focus.

Sourdough bread

Although sourdough bread is often made from refined white flour, it may be a good substitute for whole grain bread. It has a lower glycemic load than standard white bread, meaning it takes your body longer to digest, especially if eaten as part of a meal. Some of the world’s longest-lived populations consume sourdough regularly, so it must be working for them!

Nitrate-Free Chicken Sausage

A lean protein source with less saturated fat than traditional pork sausage. Choosing nitrate-free helps reduce exposure to harmful preservatives. Applegate Farms makes some good products.

Spinach and Tomato

Both are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that promote heart and immune health.

Cheddar Cheese

Provides calcium and protein; a little goes a long way in adding flavor and satisfaction.

This sandwich is best enjoyed fresh, but you can refrigerate leftovers for up to 1 day. Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven for best texture.

FAQ Questions:

How do I reheat a sausage egg and cheese sandwich?

For refrigerated sandwiches, microwave for 30–60 seconds or warm in a toaster oven until heated through. If frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator or microwave using the defrost setting before reheating until hot.

Absolutely! Pork breakfast sausage is traditional, but turkey sausage, chicken sausage, plant-based sausage, or spicy sausage patties all work well. Choose whichever fits your taste or dietary preferences.

American cheese melts beautifully and gives the sandwich a classic flavor. Cheddar, Swiss, provolone, pepper jack, mozzarella, or Colby Jack are also delicious options if you want to switch things up.

Yes! Add crispy bacon, avocado, caramelized onions, spinach, tomato, hash browns, or your favorite sauce like chipotle mayo, hot sauce, or ketchup to make the sandwich your own.
