This is a variation of our hummus pizza base recipe. This rainbow veggie pizza with turmeric hummus is super colorful; it is such a fun way to incorporate lots of nutrients in an easy and healthy meal! It makes for a beautiful appetizer or a light, plant-forward dinner!

Culinary Tips for the Best Rainbow Pizza Recipe

Try your hand at making homemade pizza dough. If you don’t have the time or desire to make your own, see if you can buy raw dough from your favorite pizza shop or grocery store. Look for a true dough ball – not the kind in a tube.

Stretch your pizza dough on a piece of parchment paper for easy transfer to the oven and quick clean-up. You can also use cornmeal underneath the dough to help it not stick to the pan or stone. Use a generous amount of cornmeal if using this method.

Because the dough doesn’t have any toppings while baking, prick holes in the crust to keep it from puffing up in the oven. Don’t skip this step!

Brushing olive oil over the crust before cooking keeps the dough from drying out too much in the oven. Use a pastry brush for even distribution.

Use homemade turmeric hummus to take your pizza to another level! 

A pizza stone is truly the best way to make a crispy pizza crust. If you are a pizza lover and enjoy making your own, it is definitely worth the investment!

This is a great recipe for kids to help make! Let them help spread the hummus and add their own toppings. Make two, mini 6” hummus pizzas by dividing the dough in half. 

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Pizza Dough: substitute a cauliflower crust, gluten-free crust, or pre-made pizza crust. You can also substitute flatbread to make a hummus pizza on pita or hummus naan pizza. If using pre-cooked crust or flatbread, follow manufacturer heating instructions.
  • Turmeric Hummus: substitute any flavor of homemade or store-bought hummus, but keep in mind that you’ll lose the bright yellow color if you do! Feel free to add other yellow veggies, such as yellow bell pepper, corn, or yellow tomatoes to complete the rainbow.
  • Cherry Tomatoes: substitute diced tomato or fresh red bell pepper.
  • Carrots: substitute other orange veggies, such as orange bell pepper or roasted butternut squash.
  • Cilantro: substitute Italian parsley, basil, or oregano, but note that the flavor will be different. You can also substitute any other green veggie of your choice. Edamame, cucumber, avocado, broccoli, kale, zucchini, or spinach would all be delicious!
  • Red Onion: substitute other purple veggies such as purple cabbage or beets.

Rainbow Hummus Pizza Variations

There are many ways to change up this recipe! Use your favorite flavor of hummus and top with any vegetables that sound good to you. Sprinkle with toasted nuts or add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil – the options are endless!

This is naturally vegan hummus pizza, but feel free to add a sprinkle of cheese if you don’t follow a vegan diet.

This rainbow veggie pizza is a lighter version of regular pizza because it is free from greasy (although delicious) cheese. Turmeric hummus is a nutrient powerhouse made with garbanzo beans, tahini, olive oil, and turmeric. Topping the hummus with other vegetables makes it even healthier! 

Chickpeas / Garbanzo Beans

Beans of all varieties are a great source of plant-based protein and an important part of a plant-forward diet. They are also high in complex carbohydrates and fiber. These nutrients are important for steady energy, satiety, blood flow, disease prevention, and digestion.

Tahini

Tahini is made from blended sesame seeds. Sesame seeds contain healthy fats that support heart health. Sesame seeds also contain fiber, phytonutrients, and plant-based protein; these are important nutrients for digestion, satiety, and stable blood sugar. (1, 2

How to Store Leftover Turmeric Hummus Pizza

This recipe is best eaten the day it is cooked. The warm crust contrasts the cold toppings really well! Place leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container, but note that the crust will get soggy the longer it is stored. Store for up to 1 week for best quality.

Rather than warming leftovers, we recommend eating them cold!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pizza dough round (~8-10 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup turmeric hummus
  • ¼ cup halved cherry tomatoes
  • 2 Tablespoons shredded carrots
  • 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 Tablespoon diced red onion

Instructions
 

Pizza Stone Instructions

  • Place pizza stone on bottom rack of oven.
  • Preheat oven to 500° F. Heat one hour before cooking for the crispiest crust.
  • Stretch pizza dough into a 12” circle on a piece of parchment paper. Brush with oil. Prick the stretched dough in about 10 different places with a fork to keep it from bubbling.
  • Using a pizza peel, slide pizza crust with parchment paper onto stone. If you don’t have a pizza peel, a baking sheet without a rim or an upside down one will work. Cook for 6-7 minutes the crust begins to turn golden brown.
  • Remove crust from oven. Spread hummus onto the center of the crust. Sprinkle remaining ingredients on top in a circular pattern, creating color stripes like a rainbow. Enjoy!

If you don't have a pizza stone:

  • Preheat oven to 500ºF.
  • Stretch pizza dough into a 12” circle on a piece of parchment paper.*  Brush with oil. Prick the stretched dough in about 5 different places with a fork to keep it from bubbling.
  • Place pizza crust and parchment paper onto your pan. Cook for 10-12 minutes, or until crust begins to turn golden brown.
  • Remove crust from oven. Spread hummus onto the center of the crust. Sprinkle remaining ingredients on top in a circular pattern, creating color stripes like a rainbow. Enjoy!

Notes

*Stretch pizza to just smaller than the size of your baking sheet. If using a rectangular baking sheet, either stretch dough into a rectangle, or create 2 smaller rounds.
