Forged vs. Stamped Knives

Do you know the difference between forged and stamped knives?

In this video, we show you how to quickly identify between the two.

A forged knife is made from a single piece of steel, heated and pounded into shape, whereas a stamped knife is made from a cut-out piece of steel attached (stamped) to a handle. Stamped knives are less expensive because they are easier to make. Although the quality of stamped knives has improved over the years, we still recommend purchasing a forged knife.

Regardless of which type of knife you decide to purchase – forged vs. stamped – you want to make sure that it feels good in your hand. We prefer the feel of forged knives because of their heavier weight, as well as the comfortable and secure grip provided by the bolster.

Need a brand recommendation? Wusthof forged knives are on the top of our list, but there are many other comparable brands of similar quality.
