Culinary Tips for the Best Herb Roasted Sweet Potatoes
We use weight instead of volume for sweet potatoes because sizes can be highly variable. Weigh at the store or use a simple kitchen scale. It’s okay if you have slightly more or less than 1 pound. Go ahead and use what you got!
Dice the sweet potato into equal sized pieces or you will have pieces that cook faster than others. Take our Knife Skills 101 course and learn how to do this like a chef!
Whisking the oil and spices together first ensures every bite has the same amount of flavor. No bland pieces allowed!
Leave the peel for the best nutrition. The peel is full of fiber and other vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that promote health. When diced and roasted, the peel is crisp and flavorful!
Be sure not to overcrowd the pan. Overcrowding causes steaming, and you won’t get those beautiful golden brown sides.

Ingredient Swaps & Substitutions
- Sweet Potatoes: use any variety: orange, white, or even purple!
- Canola or Avocado Oil: Substitute with a non-expensive extra virgin olive oil. We’ve found that the cheaper bottles from your local grocery store can withstand high heat.
- Rosemary: sub with dried sage leaves. If subbing fresh sage, it might need to be added after cooking. It isn’t as hearty as rosemary.
- Thyme: sub with dried oregano leaves. If subbing fresh oregano, see the note above regarding sage. We have the same concern!
- Granulated Garlic: Substitute ¼ teaspoon garlic powder or 2 minced garlic cloves.
- Smoked Paprika: use regular paprika, but it will be missing that extra flavor you get from smoked.

Health Benefits of Herb Roasted Sweet Potatoes
Americans love potatoes, but white is the more popular variety. Why not mix it up with a savory sweet potato dish? There is so much flavor and nutrition from the sweet potatoes, spices, and herbs!
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are nutritional powerhouses that offer a wide range of health benefits. Packed with beta-carotene, they support healthy vision and boost your immune system. Their high fiber content promotes a healthy gut, aids digestion, and helps keep you regular. Sweet potatoes are also rich in potassium, a key mineral that helps balance electrolytes, lower blood pressure, and keep your heart happy.
Canola Oil
Canola oil contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids. It also has a high smoke point, making it ideal for high-heat cooking methods, such as roasting. If you are still using vegetable oil in your pantry, it’s time for a change!
Herbs & Spices
By using herbs and spices, you can cut back on salt without sacrificing flavor, which is great news for your blood pressure and your heart. Plus, herbs and spices are packed with powerful antioxidants that help fight inflammation, the driving force behind chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
