Culinary Tips for the Best Peanut Granola Recipe

This recipe calls for brown sugar, oil, and honey. Measure the ingredients in that order to make clean-up easier! Measure the brown sugar first; it needs to be measured with a clean spoon; otherwise, it will stick to the bottom. Then, measure the oil. By measuring the oil before the honey, the honey will just slide right out!

Cook the granola until golden, but don’t expect it to be hard when you remove it from the stove. It will harden as it cools.

Add the chocolate chips after the granola cools to prevent melting.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Brown Sugar: substitute coconut sugar, cane sugar, or sugar in the raw, although the flavor will be slightly different.
  • Canola Oil: substitute avocado oil.
  • Honey: substitute agave or maple syrup for vegan stovetop granola.
  • Vanilla: substitute or add ¼ teaspoon almond extract.
  • Cinnamon: substitute pumpkin spice or apple pie spice.
  • Old-Fashioned Oats: substitute quick oats. Don’t use steel cut oats, as these have to be cooked in water for digestibility.
  • Roasted Peanuts: substitute any variety of roasted nuts, but the granola won’t be a peanut variation any more!
  • Dark Chocolate Chips: substitute mini or semi-sweet chocolate chips for best flavor. We don’t recommend using milk or white chocolate, as these are not generally healthy options.

Recipe Variations

Add some dried fruit, like raisins or dried cherries, to the granola after cooking for a chewy texture and more nutrition.

FAQ Questions:

Can I make this peanut granola vegan?

Yes. Swap the honey for maple syrup or agave syrup to make this granola fully vegan. The recipe already uses plant-based ingredients like oats and peanuts.

Yes, quick oats will work, although the texture will be slightly less chunky and crunchy. Avoid steel-cut oats since they require a different cooking method.

Adding chocolate chips while the granola is still hot will cause them to melt. Stir them in once the granola has completely cooled for the best texture.
