Culinary Tips to Make Peppermint Syrup

  • Start with higher heat, but once you see bubbles, reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a simmer. A simmer consists of small bubbles around the side of the pan and a few in the center. There is no need to have a thermometer, but if you’re interested, a simmer occurs from about 180°F to 205°F.
  • Don’t over or undercook the peppermint syrup. As soon as the sugar dissolves, it’s done!

Ingredient Swaps & Substitutions

  • Granulated sugar: Substitute brown sugar if preferred. It will create a slightly caramel-colored syrup with deeper flavor, but the clean, bright peppermint flavor shines best with white sugar.
  • Peppermint extract: You can substitute mint extract, though it may taste slightly sweeter and less bold. Avoid using essential oils, as they are too strong and can overpower the syrup.

Peppermint Simple Syrup Recipe Variations

Adjust the ingredients based on what you have on hand and your personal taste preferences. If you prefer a stronger peppermint flavor, consider adding an extra drop or two of peppermint extract—just add slowly, because extract is very potent! If you enjoy a hint of vanilla, feel free to stir in ¼ teaspoon at the end. The great thing about making simple syrup is that you can taste it as you go. You can make it extra minty or keep it sweet with just a refreshing hint of peppermint!

Is Peppermint Simple Syrup Healthy?

By making your own simple syrup, you are in charge of what ingredients are going into your body! A homemade version allows you to avoid artificial colors, unnecessary additives, and excess sugars found in many seasonal syrups.

Ingredient Control

Many store-bought syrups contain preservatives, artificial flavors, or non nutritive sweeteners. Making your own allows you to control the type of sugar and the intensity of peppermint flavor. A homemade version uses straightforward ingredients and avoids additives altogether.

Peppermint

Peppermint has been traditionally used to support digestion and soothe the stomach. While this syrup is not a concentrated therapeutic source, pairing peppermint flavor with whole ingredients helps you enjoy seasonal treats in a more intentional way.

Serving Suggestions for Peppermint Simple Syrup

This peppermint syrup is perfect for coffees, teas, hot chocolate, cocktails, and holiday desserts. We recommend adding about one tablespoon for every 8 ounces of beverage, but you might start with even less if you don’t want it too sweet. It’s much easier to start with less and add more than try to dilute your drink! Skip the café line and enjoy a festive drink at home. Add a splash to whipped cream or ice cream for a refreshing seasonal treat.

Storage Tips

Cool syrup and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The syrup will last a couple of weeks or longer. As long as it is clear, it’s still good!

FAQS

What to Do with Peppermint Simple Syrup

Add it to homemade hot chocolate or a latte for a seasonal drink! Peppermint syrup can also be used in cocktails or mocktails, or added to ice cream or baked treats for minty flavor.

Absolutely! There is mint extract and peppermint extract. Peppermint extract, as used in the recipe, is stronger than mint extract. If using mint, you might add a dash or two more!

We wouldn’t recommend using candy canes to make peppermint syrup. While they are fun, they are usually made with artificial dyes and flavors. Using a peppermint extract keeps the syrup more natural.
